Cottage Contemplations on Bad Design
As you settle down on the porch or dock of your cottage, cabin or whatever you call your summer haven, why not take a few minutes to think about this spot as THE PLACE to spend at least some of the “extended living” years that lie ahead? Not traditional 20th-Century “out of it” retirement, but 21st-Century extended living that runs decades of active, involved experiences and adventures into the future—what I like to think of as “unretirement” (everything that retirement never was).
Would this haven be a practical choice as headquarters for your unretirement, not just an emotional or memory-ridden one?
You may be undaunted by the scramble to the beach as you take a dip to celebrate your 100th birthday, or that knee may already be letting you know that an alternate beach route is in order. This and other small hurdles should be addressed so they can be resolved in advance of any problems. It wouldn’t do you much good to consider a reverse mortgage for a place with many designed in barriers and short-comings.
It is not our bodies that limit us, but bad design that undermines us. Does your sweet haven contain traps or barriers that could limit your enjoyment of the place? It’s true of many homes, so why not the summer cottage?
Start your battle against bad design this summer!
